Cycle Locks

Cycle locks are essential to help protect your bike. But how much protection do they really provide? The sad fact is, bikes get stolen. Using a lock will help prevent this but no lock is indestructable.

So with this warning why bother? A lock helps prevent a theft. The opportunist who is passing by and spots a nice bike could be put off by a good solid lock. Your main aim when securing your bike is to make your bike harder to get than the bike next to it.

To make your bike the most secured bike in the rack the key is to use strong D-lock. Look to spend about 10% of the purchase price of your bike on a lock. When you lock your bike try to have as little spare space as possible inside the 'D'. As otherwise a car bottle jack will cut through it like a knife through butter. Aim to lock your bike through the wheels and frames.

Using a second lock can also help make your bike less desirable.

Alternatively if you are doing lots of short distances e.g. less than a couple of miles a day, then simply do not use an expensive bike.

Finally make sure you have adequate insurance. If you use a bike daily then unfortunately, one day it probably will get stolen.
